説明 | Sir George Brookman (1850 to 1927) was a wealthy merchant and grocery trader in South Australia but he began his life in Glasgow in humble circumstances. He arrived as a two year at Port Adelaide in 1852. He was educated in Adelaide and found employment with D and J Fowler and Company a major grocery and wholesaling business in Adelaide. He then set up Finlayson and Company grocery business with William Finlayson. He made most of his money from investing in gold mines in Western Australia and in trading shares. He was admitted to the Adelaide Stock Exchange as a broker in 1890 and he set up Coolgardie Gold Mining and Prospecting Company in 1893 with other investors. The gold finds there made him a very wealthy man. He also invested in Broken Hill silver lead and zinc mines. He built his own city office building in 1896. He was chairman of the SA Electric Light Company for many years, he was a director of Mintaro Slate mines and was a member of state parliament. In 1903 he bought the O’Halloran Giles property at Darlington which he renamed Glenthorne Farm. He acquired a flock of Dorset Horn sheep from Sir John Melrose’s stud at Ulooloo and bred sheep and he bred White Orpington fowls. He was an avid gardener and also had a property at Meadows where he bred flowers and plants for his hobby of floristry. He was an active Congregationalist and he is most remembered for his role in establishing the School of Mines because of his interesting in mining and metallurgy. He donated £15,000 to the School of Mines and the main building which was named after him – Brookman Hall when it opened in 1903. It is now the City East campus of the University of South Australia. Sir George Brookman occupied two grand houses in Edwin Terrace Walkerville. The first house called Craigmellan was built around 1883 for Sir George Brookman after his 1878 marriage. Presumably this house was not big enough and in 1889 he built Ivanhoe at 9 Edwin Terrace with two acres of extensive grounds and gardens. Brookman was involved as a councillor and mayor for the Town of Walkerville between 1885 to 1899. He was knighted in 1920 and died at “Blair Atholl” house at Medindie in 1927. He and his wife Ethel had purchased that house in 1925 but he had left Edwin Terrace for a house in Medindie in 1912. |
