説明 | At an Armed Services Committee hearing today on North Korea, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill discussed the importance of Fort Leonard Wood’s chemical, biological, and radiological weapons training school in tackling regional threats. McCaskill questioned Admiral Harry B. Harris, the Commander of United States Pacific Command, on whether the U.S. and its allies have the appropriate equipment and training for chemical and biological threats, in light of news reports that Kim Jong-Un’s half-brother was assassinated using a biological nerve agent. “You know we do [chemical, biological, and radiological weapons training] at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri,” said McCaskill, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee. “It’s our biological defense center and I’m concerned [North Korea] are using nerve agents to kill family members they certainly are not going to hesitate to use nerve agents to kill American soldiers and our South Korean allies and innocent citizens, so I’d like you to follow up on that.” McCaskill also discussed her visit last year to U.S. anti-ballistic missile systems in the Pacific, including South Korea and Guam. McCaskill recently raised concerns to top Pentagon officials about the effect of military budget uncertainty on U.S. nuclear missile deterrence with North Korea, and discussed the critical work of the Missouri National Guard’s 131st bomb wing at Whiteman Air Force Base, which was the first National Guard unit certified to conduct a nuclear mission. She also discussed the redeployment of the B-2 bomber from Whiteman to the U.S. air base in Guam, and the importance of nuclear deterrence missions. And last year, the importance of Ft. Leonard Wood’s chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear response training school was raised by McCaskill at a hearing on the future of the Army and the changing nature of the challenges facing the United States. |
