説明 | Trentham. This pretty former dairying town is surrounded by Victorian state forests as it is in a high rainfall area. Hence you can see Eucalyptus regnans or Mountain Ash trees growing near the town. It lies 2,300 feet (or 700 metres) above sea level and the average rainfall is over 1,000 mm a year. This was outstanding pastoral country with little town development until 1859 when gold was discovered near Trentham and Blackwood. This was not a big goldfield but the discovery of some large new nuggets in 1862 boosted the fields. In 1863 the government estimated that around 1,500 diggers were employed on the goldmines near Trentham which were known as the Blue Mountains goldfields. This was the peak of alluvial gold mining around Trentham before deep shaft mining by companies began. The Trentham Gold Mining Company was registered in 1864 for such work as was the Shotover Mining Company. Mining continued throughout the 1860s. The Cosmo Company started their gold mining at Snake Gully near Trentham in 1870 and mined successful for quite a few years. The first land sales for the town were in 1860 and the first Post Office opened in 1862 although the town of Trentham was not formally gazetted by the government until 1868. As the diggers arrived in the district several hotels opened. The town was advertising for a teacher in 1863 for the town school. A Presbyterian church was built in 1860 as the town emerged but this was soon replaced with a more solid structure in 1871. In the 1870s the land around Trentham was opened up for small scale farming and the town grew. Anglican, Catholic and Methodist churches were all built between 1882 and 1892. A train line was built from Daylesford to Trentham in 1890 mainly for carrying felled timber. It closed in 1978 but the old railway station is now a small museum. Most early industry was based on tree felling and saw milling. The town has several early hotels, a foundry and general stores and banks. One old store still operating is the Red Beard Bakery that still makes sourdough bread in the old ovens dating from the 1870s. The town historical society museum is in the old police station complex which includes a very rare portable lockup station which was made around 1855 presumably for use on new goldfields. The old wooden Police Station and Courthouse was built in Trentham in 1866 in Camp Street which was the centre of the goldfields administration. The quaint Cosmopolitan Hotel was built in the same year. The setting of the town is very pretty with a waterfall just a couple of kilometres outside the town on the Coliban River where Victoria’s highest single drop waterfall exists. Water falls 32 metres over a layer of resistant volcanic basalt. |
