説明 | Kylix side B) - Theseus vs Prokrustes. The two halves of external surface are decorated with two scenes concerning the deeds of two vary popular heroes: Theseus and Herakles vs Antaeus. The Athenian hero, portrayed as a naked young man with a narrow band on his hair, advances towards Prokrustes, holding an ax with his right hand. The bearded brigand, injured, is leaning against a rock with his right hand, extending his left arm towards Theseus to beg for mercy. In the left corner of the scene the artist has painted the petasos (traveller's hat) of Theseus souspended on the wall, on the right his sword, his himation, and, below, the retrograde inscription «καλός».Some scholars consider this cup an art- work of Douris, but this attribution, made according to the inscription reading Δορι painted in the inner part of the kylix, is controversial.CAV / CAVI @ www.beazley.ox.ac.ukAttic red-figured kylixH. 9 cm.; D. to rim 23 cmAttributed to Douris [?]Ca. 500 – 490Athens, National Archaeological Museum, Inv.
