説明 | Port Vincent- Private Town.Like Port Victoria it was to be part of an 1839 Special Survey but that was relinquished in 1840. Next Anstey and Giles took out a leased run near here until it was resumed for farming and settlement in 1870, except for a parcel of 737 acres which had been bought freehold in 1854. Luke Cullen eventually owned the 737 acres and had a private town surveyed in 1877 following the declaration of the Hundred in 1872. He built a private jetty in 1877 and a wheat store nearby as a profit making venture. As his port charges were high many farmers carted their wheat to Stansbury! The government finally took control of the jetty in 1884. The town did not have a general store until 1903 when the town started to develop, with a bank in 1906, and an Institute in 1910. The port remained the main focus with a steamer service to Adelaide until 1949. The last wheat and barley was carted from the port in 1968 in a ketch to Port Adelaide. Today the town is growing with a marina, a new housing estate and still the best and cheapest seafront real estate in SA- in the town cemetery! |
