説明 | Bozeman Montana Fish Technology's research fishery biologist Kevin Kappenman and Eco-Hydrologist Erin Ryan, pictured standing in front of an endless river tank with Arctic grayling seen in the tank window. Kevin and Erin are performing swimming and fish passage studies with Arctic grayling using an open-channel flume and Denil fish passage ladders. The fish in the tank are being exercised to maintain fitness for the study. The goals of the project are to assess Arctic grayling swimming ability and their behavior and success at moving through a Denil ladder designed as a fishway. A fish’s ability to ascend a fishway (e.g. ladders, rock ramps, and culverts) is dependent on its swimming ability and its behavior associated with entering, swimming through, and exiting a structure. Promoting landscape connectivity is one of the USFWS best tools for recovery of endangered species and keeping other fish populations healthy and abundant. Maintaining and improving connectivity for all aquatic species limits the effect of climate change and landscape stresses from human impacts (i.e. roads, irrigation, oil and gas development).
