| 説明 | The male great blue heron is taking a stick from a nest that is currently not being used and the female in the nearby nest on the right finds this very arousing. She is elongating her neck upward and has the feathers on her neck sicking out rather than laying down. These are signs of excitement and arousal. After this photo was taken, the male took the stick to the female and she placed it in their nest as part of their mating rituals. Male great blue herons often fly a lap or two around the rookery with a stick to show how competent they are at getting sticks. However, this male heron may be young or not very competent. Earlier in the day as he was grandly flying with a stick, he dropped the stick into the pond. He appears to have realized that pilfering sticks from a nearby nest is easier and less prone to failure. This is the first heron active nest for 2019 in rookery at Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado.
