説明 | Mammuthus columbi (Falconer, 1857) - fossil Columbian mammoth skull from the Pleistocene of Wyoming, USA. (UW 6368, University of Wyoming Geological Museum, Laramie, Wyoming, USA)This is the "Rawlins Mammoth", also known as the "Union Pacific Mammoth", a mature male Columbian mammoth. It was discovered in the early 1960s by a dragline operator who was deepening a spring in southern Wyoming. Paleoindian artifacts have been found at the site, including from near mammoth bone material, suggesting it may have been a kill, or was exploited after getting stuck in muddy sediments. The skeleton was recovered from "black muck", and has been interpreted as being derived from the unit A-unit B boundary of Haynes et al. (2013).From museum signage:"Like woolly mammoths, Columbia mammoths had high, dome-shaped skulls. But Columbian tusks were less spiral-shaped than woolly tusks and much larger: sometimes up to 16 feet long!Discovered in Wyoming in 1960, this mammoth skull is affectionately named "Nip" after Dr. Brainerd "Nip" Mears, a benefactor of the University of Wyoming Geological Museum."Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Mammalia, Proboscidea, ElephantidaeLocality: Sage Chicken Spring (NW1/4, SE1/4, SE1/4, Section 1, T18N, R91W), south-southeast of the town of Creston Junction & southwest of the town of Rawlins, western Carbon County, southern Wyoming, USA-------------------Reference cited:Haynes et al.
