説明 Allendale North. Just beyond this little town is a lone grave in a large paddock. The grave is surrounded by a cast iron fence and one large pepper Tree, Schinus mollis keeps guard. The inscriptions reads Scotty’s Grave 1846, erected by subscription. Some say his correct name is James Burnett a shepherd who drowned in August 1846 whilst trying to cross the nearby Light River. His local friends raised money by subscription to erect this headstone on his grave. A newspaper report of 1934, however, claims he was Craig Scott, a mine manager from Burra who rode to Adelaide every week and was a popular singer at the local Allendale pub. He was in love with the publican’s wife and planned to run away with her but on the night they tried to escape he fell from his horse and was killed. This story sounds so romantic and is probably just journalistic spin. Why would locals near Kapunda raise money to erect a tombstone for a non-local who passed through on his way to Adelaide weekly? The newspaper story did add that the grave was placed on the property of A W Vogt and that the cast iron grave fence was erected in 1946 for the centenary of Scotty's death and that the cast iron work was done then by Mr Weckert of Kapunda. The publican of the Wheatsheaf Inn at Allendale North and a couple of other locals financed the grave fence.
