説明 | Belalie North. This tiny settlement emerged when the railway line from Port Pirie to Peterborough (then Petersburg) passed through here in 1879. The railway station here was the highest station in South Australia at over 2,000 feet above sea level. The next highest was Gumbowie siding between Terowie and Peterborough. The steam engines carrying goods to and from Broken Hill from 1886 always struggled to climb the big hills into Belalie North. The town was always just where several roads crossed each other as it was a private town and not a government town. The stone school at Belalie North was opened in 1881. That school closed in 1968 and the ruins are still visible with the pine trees along the back fence line of the school yard. It faces the old railway line (the current standard gauge railway line of 1969 bypasses Belalie North). Almost next door to the school ruins is the old General Store from the late 19th century. Beyond that is the site where the district hall once stood and the War Memorial gates still stand. Next to that is the Belalie North Methodist Church and Sunday School hall. The Belalie Summit Hall, as the town was originally known as Belalie Summit, was built in 1909 and Methodist Church services were held in it from that time until the church was built in 1923. The church closed and was sold as a residence in 1995. Belalie North’s most famous son was R.M Williams who was born and raised here. He went on to found the boot and later clothing stores and manufacturing in nearby Jamestown. Stores bearing his name are found around Australia and overseas. |
