説明 | Seen here is a model-based reconstruction of life near Hollywood in southern California during the Pleistocene. This is a public exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.-------------------------------The La Brea Tar Pits are a famous fossil locality in the Los Angeles urban area of southern California. Petroleum (crude oil and natural gas) seeps from the ground, and has done so for a long time. During the Pleistocene Ice Age, animals would get stuck in the weathering-degraded oil ("tar"). Thousands of fossils have been retrieved from this site. This photo shows models of two Smilodon saber-toothed tigers eyeing an animal stuck in the tar. Fossil bones from predators are disproportionately represented in the fauna at La Brea Tar Pits.-------------------------------See info. at:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Brea_Tar_Pits |
