Denton was born in the city of Richmond, Hamilton county, Tennessee, Oct. 20, 1848. Being unable to join the army because of his youth, he advanced his age two years and joined the volunteers at a pint in Missouri, Oct. 15, 1864, being in Company E, Third Regiment, U. S. Infantry.He was given an honorable discharge, Nov. 29, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kas., with W. D. Hubbard, Captain of the Thirteenth Missouri Cavalry, commanding the regiment.He departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Belle Stevens at Dewey, Okla., at the advance age of 79 years, 3 months and 11 days.He was a farmer by trade, but his health would not permit him to follow farming. He came to Independence about 25 years ago and only recently made his home in Oklahoma. He had gone to his daughter’s for an over-holiday visit when his last illness came.His wife and several children preceded him to the great beyond and there are left one son and four daughters to mourn his death. They are: Sam Denton, near Cherryvale, Belle Stevens and Jessie Feuell, both of Dewey, Mary Newton of this city and Cora Ballinger of Tulsa, also numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.In his younger days he was a regular attendant at the Baptist church in his home town.Contributed by Mrs. Maryann Johnson a Civil war researcher and a volunteer in the Kansas Room of the Independence Public Library, Independence, Kansas. |
