説明 | Introduced, warm season, annual herb up to 1m tall; armed with yellowish 3-pronged rigid spines at the base of the leaves and at stem nodes. Leaves are dark green and shiny on top, and greyish downy underneath. Margins are entire to 3-5 lobed. Burrs are oval to oblong shaped and covered in hooked spines. Flowers most of the year. Common in disturbed areas such as run down pastures, waste areas and along roadsides and fallowed ground. Often spread by sheep, dense populations are often found in camp areas. Burrs are spread attached to animals and clothing. Easily spread by water, found along water ways particularly after a flood. A weed of summer cropping areas such as cotton, maize, sorghum and rice. Burrs are a major cause of vegetable fault in wool of sheep and alpacas. Seedlings are poisonous to animals, particularly horses and pigs. Competitive pastures and crops prevent its establishment. Herbicides are registered for use in pasture and fallow situations. Chipping/ slashing prior to flowering can be effective. Plants with burrs should be burnt. |
