説明 | Ceremony at a local temple in Bali- installation of a new 'barong'. On the day prior to my leaving Bali, my guide invited me to be a guest at the inauguration of their new 'Barong' (the demon like creature you see here) at a local temple. It was a true cultural interaction, interacting with the locals at grass roots level. The food was good, and genuinely home cooked, I was surrounded by lovely people and it was a true cultural experience. My guide has gone of to tend to the preparations while a relative explains things to an elderly Australian visitor in traditional garb. I got talking to his wife, a charming old lady, and they told me they visit Bali every year. Considered a protector and harbinger of good luck, a Barong is a lion-like creature and character in the mythology of Bali, Indonesia. He is the king of the spirits, leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen and mother of all spirit guarders in the mythological traditions of Bali. The battle between Barong and Rangda is featured in the Barong dance to represent the eternal battle between good and evil. (Bali, Indonesia, May 2018) |
