| 説明 | This fine Lawrence shot to end the week with Newtownards High Street on display! I would have expected that area to be known as "The Diamond" given the province of its location? The young lass is boldly posing for Mr. French, but in the background somebody has taken his jarveys head away for repairs! A recent contributor mentioned a profusion of "horse apples", well they are in abundance in this shot with no signs of motorised transport evident so when was this taken?Based on investigation into the businesses captured in the image, and input from derangedlemur and Niall McAuley it seems likely this image was taken closer to the 1900-end of the catalogue range (or perhaps even slightly after). Robinparkes and guliolopez also draw our attention (away from the square and it's equine adornments) to the 17th century Market Cross in the middle distance. Thanks as usual for everyone's time and inputs on these images. We really cannot thank the community enough - Have a great weekend all!Photographer: Robert FrenchCollection: Lawrence Photograph CollectionDate: c.1880-1900 (likely closer to or slightly after 1900)NLI Ref: L_ROY_08062You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie |
