説明Ectenocrinus simplex (Hall, 1847) - fossil crinoid stems in fossiliferous limestone from the Ordovician of Kentucky, USA. (field of view ~6.5 cm across)This fossiliferous limestone is part of the famous Cincinnatian Series of the tristate area of Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana. Rocks in the Cincinnatian were deposited in relatively shallow marine facies during the Late Ordovician. The Cincinnatian succession is mostly interbedded limestones and shales. Most of the limestones are event beds (= tempestites), deposited during ancient storms. The long structures in this sample are partial stems of Ectenocrinus crinoids. Crinoids (sea lilies) are sessile, benthic, filter-feeding, stalked echinoderms that are relatively common in the marine fossil record. Crinoids are also a living group, but are relatively uncommon in modern oceans. A crinoid is essentially a starfish-on-a-stick. The stick, or stem, is composed of numerous stacked columnals, similar to small poker chips. Stems and individual columnals are the most commonly encountered crinoid fossils in the field. Intact, fossilized crinoid heads (crowns, calices, cups) are unusual - after death, the crinoid body disintegrates rapidly. The soft tissues holding the skeletal pieces together decay and the skeleton falls apart.Classification: Animalia, Echinodermata, Crinoidea, Disparida, HomocrinidaeeStratigraphy: Fulton Submember, lower Kope Formation, lower Edenian Stage, lower Cincinnatian Series, Upper OrdovicianLocality: Woolcott South Outcrop - roadcut on the eastern side of Rt. 1159, just south of the Rt. 9-Rt. 1159 intersection, southern side of the town of Woolcott, northern Bracken County, northern Kentucky, USA (38° 43' 52.53" North latitude, 84° 06' 04.77" West longitude)---------------See info. at:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crinoid
