説明I love the Thanksgiving holiday, and not because of that dang turkey meal, I hate turkey, it’s for the wonderful movies that come out this week that I get to see with my family! The first Creed was such a spectacular surprise, being such a huge Rocky fan, I never fathomed how incredible that film would turn out to be before I saw it after going through a horrendous Rocky V and an alright Rocky Balboa. But here we are, three years later and my dream sequel for Creed is here, Adonis is finally avenging his father and fighting Drago’s kid, it’s just too perfect not to make! Well, did this dream sequel live up to my expectations? Let’s check it out!Good: What I was so impressed with about Creed II is that the film was able to encapsulate all the drama that made the first Creed so outstanding along with all the energy of the Rocky sequels. Creed II really felt like if someone blended the first Creed with Rocky II, III, and IV which is great for two reasons: we get to see Creed dive into some great dramatic beats like Rocky, such as his family and his legacy; and it also means that if there’s another Creed movie, which I hope there is one, we can get some original obstacles for Adonis Creed to tackle. But speaking of old beats returning, I was stunned about how Ivan Drago and his son were handled in this film, Drago is an actual character with an real and believable character arc in Creed II! The tension between Creed in the Dragos is handled so well, and then when the third act arrives, SHIT HITS THE FAN. No spoilers, but Creed II has one of the greatest final matches in the entire Rocky franchise, period. Like I said earlier, this film bring all the energy from the Rocky sequels in its fights and training montages, but with the gravitas of Adonis Creed. Man, I haven’t even talked about Rocky Balboa in this review yet. I swear, every damn time Rocky said something inspirational or when that Bill Conti score played, I got so damn emotional, Rocky truly is one of the greatest cinematic characters of all time. The rest of the cast in this film was great as well, there are also a few great cameos that all Rocky fans will recognize that add to much to the drama of Creed and the Dragos.Bad: My largest complaint is I felt the film wasn’t all that well paced in the first act. It’s no spoiler that Adonis Creed becomes the heavyweight champion at the beginning of this film, but it happens so fast that I never felt the satisfaction that I did when I watched Rocky win it at the end of Rocky II. Now in terms of the director, there wasn’t as big of a Ryan Coogler-shaped hole in this film, but the filmmaking from first time Steven Caple Jr. was also pretty by-the-numbers. A bunch of simple scenes were shot in handheld at it was just too chaotic and distracting, I felt they didn’t match the tone of the scene. It’s a minor gripe, but the directing never took away from this spectacular drama.Overall, the metaphor I’d use for this Creed II is it was like watching your grandma walk down a huge flight of stairs, I was nervous as hell watching this film that, at any moment, she’d just fall flat on her face and it’d be a disaster. Thankfully she made it down with ease, and on the last steps, did a perfect black flip and landed on one foot. For these reasons, I’m going to give Creed II a 9/10. I definitely want one more Creed film, just to wrap up an even trilogy for such a great character. If you’ve seen Creed II, let me know what you thought about it in the comments below! Also, make sure to look forward to my Ralph Breaks the Internet review soon!
