説明 | This is the hot spring at Bath. Here they took the thermal springs which were sacred to Sulis and dedicated them to Minerva. Alongside the baths are the remains of a temple to Sulis Minerva. This was common Roman practice across the Empire. The temple is one of only two classical temples to survive in good condition in the British Isles. It seems the baths weren't solely a place for healing. Amongst the ruins there have been many folded lumps of lead found. These are curse tablets. The dedicator would write a request for a curse, and leave if for the goddess with an offering to bribe her into taking action. The baths are in good condition, but not perfect. The water looks like it might be rich in copper salts. Sadly that's not the case. The water was originally covered. Now it's exposed to the sunlight and warm, making it a perfect home to blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. This will make you very ill. If you want to take to the waters, you're much better off at the modern Spa built on site. |
