説明 | ah, them good ol' days!on tienertoer togetherbut how and why did we end up in Rhenen?Railway info: Rhenen is now the terminus of a single track railway only served by a local service from Utrecht. This track was originally built in 1886 as part of the connection Amsterdam - Amersfoort - Nijmegen - Germany. This came to an abrupt end in may 1940, when the railway bridge over the Rhine river was destroyed. This bridge was about 300m behind where I stood taking this picture. After the war, the bridge was never rebuilt. Long distance railway traffic from Amsterdam to Nijmegen and Germany was all diverted via Arnhem. The tracks between Amersfoort and Rhenen were abandoned. In 1981, the Veenendaal - Rhenen stretch (less than 20km) was reopened for passenger traffic after reconstruction and electrification works. |
