| 説明 | Ohio Caverns is the largest cave system in Ohio. It is located in a bedrock knob called Mt. Tabor on the southern side of the Bellefontaine Outlier (= Ohio's elevationally highest area). The cave is hosted in the Middle Devonian Columbus Limestone, which is part of a widespread shallow marine carbonate succession in eastern and midwestern America.Shown above are vermiculations on a cave wall in Ohio Caverns. Vermiculations are relatively small, worm-like structures composed of fine-grained sediments that occur on some cave ceilings and walls. These features are thought to form as films of water shrink by evaporation, leaving behind concentrations of material along irregular ridges (e.g., see Bojar et al., 2014).Vermiculation morphology varies - the examples shown above (click on the photo to get a close-up view) are mostly consistent with elongated spot vermiculations and leopard's spot vermiculations (see classification presented in Hill & Forti, 1997).The yellowish-orangish-reddish coloration is due to iron oxide staining.Locality: Ohio Caverns, Mt.
