| 説明 | Christchurch Anglican Cathedral. The Cathedral, now in ruins and about to be demolished pending court cases was constructed between 1864 and 1873. NZ architect Benjamin Mountford took over in 1873 and had a fine tower, balconies and porches added with stained glass windows. This remodelled Cathedral reopened in 1881 although all work was not completed until 1904. Before the earthquakes the spire was over 200 feet high and the cathedral had been the centrepiece of Christchurch since its opening. The Diocese of Christchurch was created out of the Diocese of NZ in 1856 with Bishop Henry Harper the incumbent Bishop from 1856 to 1890. The current Bishop is Victoria Matthews who was appointed as the first female bishop in Canada in 1994. She was enthroned in 2008. The Bishop operates from a parish church in Christchurch as the Cathedral was deconsecrated in 2011. A “cardboard cathedral” has been built in Latimer Square. It opened in July 2013 amid much controversy and criticism of the Bishop. The former Anglican Church on this site was the first church built in Christchurch in 1850 but it was demolished in 2011. The Cardboard Cathedral is 21 metres high and the roof is made of 96 cardboard tubes. The architect was Shigeru Ban a noted innovative Japanese architect. The new cathedral seats 700 people. The old cathedral will be totally demolished if the Anglican Church and the Bishop have their way pending final court cases. It has already been partially demolished to make it a safe. |
