説明From left to right, Swedish Ambassador to the U.S. Jonas Hafstrom, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and former Flint resident and U.S. Ambassador to Sweden Michael Wood meet for the groundbreaking of a biogas plant in Flint, and the creation of the Flint Center of Energy Excellence. This photo appeared in "The Michigan Times" 10/13/08. Along with the photo I wrote an article that also printed in the same issue. See article below.Flint may finally be in route to recovery from its many years of losing factories, jobs and people all while helping address climate change and reducing America's dependency on oil.King Carl XVI Gustaf, recently came to Flint for the groundbreaking on the new Biogas plant SBI, (Swedish Biogas International). His country, Sweden, is a worldwide leader in bio-energy. Gustaf recently noted that his country heats over 65 percent of its houses with renewable energy and hopes for 100 percent energy efficiency by 2020.The trip to Flint by the King of Sweden was just one of many positive moves Flint has made toward being a center of Green Energy in the past month. The Governor dedicated one of the state's first Centers of Energy Excellence here in Flint and said that connections between companies like SBI and the world-class universities in Michigan can "create jobs and make Michigan the [country's] epicenter of the alternative energy industry."The U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, Flint native Michael Wood said "problems are often opportunities in disguise, " in regards to the issues brought to Flint by the loss of 90 percent of GM jobs but that also has given Flint the opportunity to become a leader in the renewal of the planet.Michigan, a state with roughly the same population as Sweden hopes to hit 10 percent energy efficiency by 2015. SBI already has over 1,200 employees and 15 years of experience in Sweden."Flint is redefining itself," said Governor Jennifer Granholm, who spoke at the ground breaking ceremony. Flint is going green. Biogas, a fuel that sounds almost futuristic, is created through special processing of the city's waste water.A couple days earlier GM announced that it would build the new battery powered engine for the Chevy Volt here in Flint. The Volt can drive 40 miles on a battery before the gasoline assist comes on and puts out about 50 mpg.UM-Flint has also been working hard pushing green technology and has opened the Urban Alternatives House just off campus at 519 Garland Street in the historic Carriage Town neighborhood. The house will be a showcase for sustainable living, including water reclamation and green building technologies.Nic Mihailoff, UM-Flint Launch's in-house business mentor has been pushing green technology since his coming to the University this summer. Mihailoff recently represented UM-F Launch at a recent Green Jobs Now event which was held at the Flint Farmers Market. Mihailoff has been working on bringing the use of efficient wind turbines for powering homes to our community along with other ecologically sound practices such as green roofs. With this major push toward green energy happening in Flint, UM-Flint and its students have been put in a great position to become leaders in this emerging field."
