| 説明 | Goyder Memorials/Commemorations. Goyder is remembered in the small town of Goyder but that was never a success. He South Australia his name is used for streets or roads in Erindale, Brompton, Goolwa, Kadina, Mount Compass, Neales Flat near Eudunda and a recent naming at Seaford Heights. There is the Goyder Pavilion at the Show Grounds and the Goyder Highway in SA runs from Crystal Brook via Burra to Morgan and Monash in the Riverland. Interstate Goyder’s name is especially used in Darwin and the Northern Territory because of his surveying work there. There is a Goyder street in the Darwin suburb of Parap, another in Stuart Park and a Goyder Square in Palmerston, and Goyder Park on the Darwin waterfront. This park was only opened in February 2016 to commemorate the landing of Goyder and his party at Darwin on 5th February 1869. This was the first permanent white settlement in the northern part of what became the Northern Territory. There is a Goyder Street in the Canberra suburb of Narrabundah, another in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, and the main street of Corrigin in Western Australia is named Goyder Street. One of George Goyder’s sons took up land there in 1908. More members of the Goyder family settled in WA and the recent CEO of Westfarmers Australia Richard Goyder is probably a great nephew of George Goyder. Although there are no statues of Goyder known to us there are many memorials to Goyder’s Line in SA. There are memorials of some kind in Kyancutta and Cleve on Eyre Peninsula, and Terowie, Orroroo, Melrose, Peterborough, and Morchard near Orroroo in the Mid North. Further south there are memorials or cairns near Sutherlands out from Eudunda, near Worlds End and near Redhill. The SA government also set up the Goyder Institute for Water Research in 2010 to look at water management and climate change projections. There are some geographical features around Australia named after George Goyder too ranging from the Goyder River in Arnhem Land to Goyder’s Pillar in the Simpson Desert and Goyder’s Lagoon near Clifton Hills Station on the way to Birdsville. Politically there is the electoral division of Goyder in the Northern Territory which covers an area south of Darwin and the SA electorate of Goyder which covers Yorke Peninsula and the Goyder Regional Council which is based in Burra. The Goyder Regional Council covers the area from Terowie in the north which is just outside Goyder’s Line down to Eudunda in the south which is within Goyder’s Line. |
