| 説明 | Poem 9 from OUTCASTS IN GREENWOOD: Poems inspired by the Medieval Robin Hood BalladsTHE ABBOT'S MONOLOGUEWhy must you, Prior, be always in my beard? I have known a louseBe less tenacious. You’ve no notion what this weasel stands to lose,And I to gain, by my transaction. He forfeits all – he cannot pay –Land and livelihood, all. Malign munificence – elaborate ploy!I shall have him kiss my ring, make great pretensions to mercy,And he will plead by rood and relic, saint and maiden Mary,Ere I refuse him. (Shoo away that crow, tapping at the casement. It irks me so.) My face will be flint, I’ll not waver, contentWith half measures. Damn conscience, damn mercy, damn that bird!I’ll revel in his loss. Why must you, Prior, be always in my beard?(Poems and pictures Copyright Giles Watson, 2006.) |
