説明....was a stamp collector.I was browsing among some cheap postal history when this item jumped out at me.I had recently found a ranting book review about the famous russian spy,Melita Norwood, who lived a quiet life in a semi in Bexleyheath whilst sending secrets to the soviets. Some historians and writers consider her a more important spy than Philby, Burgess or Maclean. Clearly, her husband, Hilary who died in 1986 had been a philatelist. This is a first day cover franked with 5 (one on the reverse) 4kopek stamps commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 1903 second social democratic party workers congress. The registered letter arrived in Dover on the 6th August 1973. Depicted is Lenin's party card and a stylised RSDRP of the party and banner. The1907 3rd congress was held in London. There is debate over where it was held, but I favour the Brotherhood Church in Hackney's Southgate Road. Melita Norwood was born in 1912 with a Latvian emigre father who lived in the russian enclave of Christchurch. It was to Tuckton, Christchurch in the early 1900s that Tolstoy's biographer and publisher, Vladimir Chertkov came from Purleigh in Essex, and recreated the publishing industry in exile around the great author. Chertkov eventually returned to Russia, dying in 1936.Melita Norwod died in 2005 aged 93. Her husband, the addressee of this letter was also of Russian extraction- his father was Bronislaus Nussbaum, and Hilary changed his name to Norwood, a pooterish suburb of south London, before he married Melita Sirnis. One imagined that the postman for Garden Avenue DA7 4LF knocked many times at No 34 with interesting and mysterious packages and letters from Eastern Europe. www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2005/jul/03/past.davidrosewww.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/2650886/...And here is 34 Garden Avenue on Google street, with the blue (not red) van outside.
