説明 | Photograph of the wooden cross marking the spot where American aviator Kiffin Yates Rockwell’s wrecked plan crashed after he was shot down by German airplanes between Rodern and Thann, France. Rockwell was serving at the time of his death in the Escadrille Americaine (also referred to as the “Lafayette Escadrille”) in the French Aviation Service. Photograph taken by Kiffin’s brother Paul Ayres Rockwell on September 23, 1920, on the four-year anniversary of Kiffin Rockwell’s death. The cross was erected in memory of the fallen aviator by Alsacian officers—volunteers in the French Army. Part of the caption on back of the photograph reads: “The Vosges Mountains in the background. The Cross was erected in memory of the fallen aviator, by Alsacian officers, volunteers in the French Army” (September 23, 1920) [Photograph by: Paul A. Rockwell]. From Kiffin Y. Rockwell Papers, WWI 122, WWI Papers, Military Collection, State Archives of North Carolina, Raleigh, N.C. |
