| 説明 | The following sentences are from one of the more amazing minds ever to grace the Jewish scene: The first Chief Rabbi of Israel during the twenties and thirties, Abraham Isaac HaCohen Cook, renowned Talmudist, legal authority, mystic and Zionist. He shows how inextricably intertwined the conceptual notions are of the feeling of belonging together and the land of Israel. The original Hebrew is orders of magnitude more beautiful and a lot is lost in the translation (learn your Hebrew!):“Hear me, my people: from the depths of my soul I call unto you, from the deepest depths of the soul of my soul, from the bond of life with which I am bound to all of you and you are all bound to me, from that feeling that I feel more piercingly and profoundly than any feeling in my life – that you, only you, only all of you, every single one of you, all your souls, all your generations—only you are the meaning of my life, in you and through you I live—in you, in the inclusive totality of all of you my life has that essence which is called life. Without you I have nothing: all the hopes, all the strivings, all the value and purpose of living – all these I find in myself only with you. I need to tie myself to your souls one and all, I must love you with a limitless love, I cannot feel any other feeling, all the great and small passions throughout all the journeys of my life, they are all treasured up in my love of you, of everything that you are, of the all-encompassing wholeness in which each individual amongst you was, is, and forever will be. Every one of you, each solitary soul that forms a part of your completeness, is a wondrous and mighty spark in the torch of eternal light which irradiates for me the luminescence of existence. With you, my people, my nation, my mother, source of my life, with you I fly beyond the expanses of the universe. Because of your timelessness I live forever, through your splendor I am suffused with the glory and magnificence, in your torment I am racked with agony, by the anguish in your souls I am soaked in bitterness, from the knowledge and wisdom in your breasts – behold I am knowledgeable and wise. Every pulsation, every habit of your habitation is the reservoir of my life’s blood. Your land, the land of your hopes, is body to me, her skies are for me the debut of divine favor, the nascence of infinite majesty, her Carmel and Sharon are the wellsprings of promise, the origin of blessing, the genesis of joy; her briars and thistles are swathed before me in grandeur and resplendence everlasting…”Wow! And this comes from a person not usually known for effusive talk. It leaves me with little doubt about his love for his people. |
