| 説明 | Hartley township. Hartley is one of the many small towns near Lithgow based around a colliery in latter days, but originally based around the main western road. It was sited at the base of the Victoria Pass that Wentworth, Blaxland and Lawson discovered in 1813. When the railway came it bypassed the town and later roads bypassed the town too. Its wild mining days (kerosene shale) are exemplified by the fine and large Courthouse in Hartley which was built in 1837. The simple, stone classical façade is one of the best examples of classical Greek architecture in Australia. The proportions and symmetry are perfect. It was due for demolition in 1926 but escaped such an act. The whole town is preserved as an historic site. It has Georgian style cottages from the 1840s and 1850s, and a fine Catholic Church (1842-8) and presbytery (also 1842). A former convict John Grant was the main benefactor of its construction which has a French influenced interior. The Church has a stone pillar on each corner of the Gothic Revival building and an unusual bellcote. The interior is in Australia red cedar. The nearby presbytery is built in sandstone in the Georgian style as a single storey residence with a veranda on two sides which is supported by stone pillars. Pink marble was used in the side and rear walls of the house. The church and presbytery are the focal points of the whole village. The Post Office/store and the Royal Hotel were built in 1846. It is Australia’s oldest post office building. The Royal was first licensed in 1849. It later became the Anglican manse and school. |
