説明 | Lewis Welch sponsored the build for a new Indy car, named after his home town of Novi, it had a 16-valve V8 with gear-driven double overhead camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers, front-mounted, intercooled centrifugal supercharger. It breathed through three Winfield carburetors, it was rated at 450hp.The Novi was called the greatest car never to win the Indianapolis 500, Ralph Hepburn finished 4th in 1941, the first race after the war, in 1946, a DNF. In 1947, the two Novi Governor Mobile Specials qualified. One DNF, the other finished fourth. Tragedy struck in 1948, when one of the Novi Grooved Piston Specials hit the wall in qualifying, killing Hepburn. Dennis (Duke) Nalon took over and finished in third place.More bad luck plagued the Novi after numerous attempts up until 1961, when sold off.Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum |
