| 説明 | St Michael's Boulge is mostly famed for the story of the Persian rose. As explained on the label at the head of Edward Fitzgerald's grave the rose was brought from Naishapur where it was found on the grave of the poet Omar Khayyam and brought to Suffolk by the admirers of Fitzgerald, who had famously translated the "Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám". The rose has not thrived in this dark churchyard nor has enjoyed the attentions of the many cutting collectors over the years. Now it seems a new rose has been planted in the protective enclosure which is flowering quite nicely. Unfortunately it is not the correct rose - not even the correct colour - being orange instead of pink - which is a shame when its description would lead the uninformed to think it the historic Persian specimen. The roses at the foot of the grave could well still be the correct variety but they showed no sign of flowering.Meanwhile my own specimen of the old rose Omar Khayyam is still alive, following our house move of three years ago but not looking terribly happy. |
