説明 | This trail begins on US550 at the tunnel just south or Ouray, Colorado, and continues uphill and eastward to Engineer Pass. I hiked the first 2.5 miles to the mine. Much of the trail was carved out of the rock face of the mountain that it traverses. I had read that the narrow trail with steep fall-off was pretty scary. I found the trail to be at least 3 or 4 feet wide at the narrowest places, and although it would be fatal to go off the side, I never had any worries. The trail is part of the Hardrock 100 race. After running for 60 miles in the San Juan mountains and then having to traverse this in the dark, I can guess that someone with a vivid imagination might be concerned.I'd hate to meet a bear coming the other way!You can see the town of Ouray in the distance. |
