説明 | The loggia is located at the south-east corner of Iford Manor. The visitors' entrance to the garden is round the corner on the left of the picture: the wrought-iron gate can just be glimpsed. Peto constructed the Loggia prior to 1907, and he used it as a dining area when the weather was suitable. Today the loggia is the point at which visitors buy their tickets of admission.Robin Whalley, in the introduction to the 1993 edition of The Boke of Iford, reports that Gertrude Jekyll suggested that the scale of the loggia was too small for the use of Ionic columns. Whalley, however, rightly points out that Peto paid the greatest attention to scale. The wrought-iron balustrade above the loggia is Italian and dates from the 15th century. This balustrade is the visitor's first intimation that, at Iford, nothing can be taken for granted; an object which the eye might slide over -- in this case a device to prevent people falling off the upper terrace -- turns out to be both ancient and interesting.Note the Byzantine roundels between the arches. |
