説明 | The open understory of the South Fork of Deep Creek has abundant stands of both Calamagrostis canadensis (bluejoint) and Calamagrostis rubescens (pinegrass). The two are ecologically and morphologically distinct. Calamagrostis rubescens inhabits dry understory settings, forms leafy bunches less than two feet tall (superficially appearing as basal leaf bunches), and has an erect narrow panicle that remains erect throughout the season. The collar region of the stem is usually hairy (but sometimes the hairs are few in this region). Calamagrostis canadensis inhabits wetter understory settings, forms leafy stems often at least three feet tall (the leaves are not clustered toward the ground level), and has a nodding panicle that becomes an open nodding panicle by late summer when spikelets disperse. The collar region of the stem is usually glabrous (but sometimes slightly hairy in this region).Flowering occurs earlier in Calamagrostis rubescens (e.g., mostly during June and early July in this area) and later in Calamagrostis canadensis (e.g., mostly during later July and August in this area). |
