説明 | Yackandandah. This NSW pastoral run was taken out in 1837 and named Yackandandah. This Aboriginal word means boulders by two creeks. In 1852 gold was discovered in several creeks near Yackandandah and the town was created in 1855. But land was not surveyed and sold until 1856. By then it had 1,500 inhabitants. The earliest public buildings included the Anglican Church (1861), the school (1862), the Bank of Victoria (1860), the Courthouse (1864), the Athenaeum (1878) and the Post Office (1863/1887) at the top of High Street. The early gold mining town also had two sawmills, a flourmill and five hotels. By the 1880s hydraulic sluicing was used to obtain the gold and fewer miners lived in the town. The rail from Beechworth reached the town in 1891 and farming surpassed gold mining. Extensive planting of street trees took place in 1906 and the town has preserved its 19th century charm by replacing few of the old buildings in the main street. The road to Wodonga is named Isaac Avenue after Sir Isaac Isaacs who grew up in Yackandandah before attending senior school in Beechworth. He lived at no 1 Isaac Ave now a Curio shop with the house being built in 1866. His family moved to Yackandandah in 1859. |
