説明Over the past eight years, this dedicated couple have volunteered more than 12,000 hours as on-site hosts at the St. Anthony Sand Dunes, which blanket an expanse of 10,600 acres and receive approximately 300,000 visitors annually. From mid-May to mid-October, the site’s Egin Lakes Campground is typically full, and day visitors—equestrians, pedestrians, off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, and others—flock to the site as well. As campground hosts, Sand Crab and Sand Flea perform duties ranging from answering questions and assisting visitors to supervising volunteer projects and maintaining amenities. They are also known as local experts on the more challenging aspects of dune navigation. As such, they are indispensable when accidents occur on the dunes. Both county and BLM officials rely on the Malatos’ skills and knowledge to help direct rescue buggies and BLM “side-by-sides” to locate victims within the vast sand dune complex. Grateful visitors often contact the Upper Snake Field Office with compliments on the Egin campground’s clean condition and give praise for Sand Crab and Sand Flea’s efforts, noting that they are “the best camp hosts ever” and that they go out of their way to make for the best visitor experience possible.
