説明 | #mypubliclandsroadtrip Travels Back in Time with BLM Eastern States: Surveying Your Public Lands The Land Ordinance of 1785 was the first major land law of the United States. It created the Public Land Survey System which is the basis for all public and private land ownership of lands that once belonged to the United States of America. The ordinance mandated the first rules for surveying and selling the Federal public domain and for the stewardship of the land title records created by the process. This extensive land tenure system is the foundation of every land action mandated by FLPMA in areas once part of the public domain. As part of this year’s anniversary celebration The Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) BLM employees read the Land Ordinance of 1785 from which FLPMA was derived in a multimediaproduction. In 1812, a young American nation faced the challenge of transforming wilderness to agricultural use and acquiring the revenue to pay its war debts. The General Land Office was established to handle the business associated with the sale of public lands for private ownership, transforming wilderness to agricultural use, and generating income for the Federal government. The "Gateway to Land Ownership" as it was colloquially dubbed, helped millions of Americans in the 19th and 20th centuries acquire public lands for private and agricultural usage, while simultaneously generating income for the Federal Government. As the successor agency to the original GLO, the BLM, a bureau of the Department of the Interior, was established in 1946 with the merger of the Grazing Service and the GLO. Today, live access to Federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States, including image access to more than five million Federal land title records issued between 1820 and the present are available online to the public at www.glorecords.blm.gov/ The GLO records collection is primarily housed at the BLM Eastern States Office in Washington, DC. These records are accessible to the public 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday. Photos and videos courtesy BLM Eastern States. |
