説明 | The concreted pavement broke into divots; here is one with the topside down. The hard matrix is formed of different sized soil particles. It is reported that termites mix saliva, faeces and soil to form this matrix. The pavement surface varies in thickness with chambers made beneath it. One estimate is that one 2m diameter surface is equivalent to about 3 wheelbarrow loads of concrete. A lot of work for tiny termites. The hardpan or pavement surface looks similar to the matrix of the chambers and is continuous with it. © Fiona Walsh 2016 |
