説明 | Inside our #EarthExpedition ATom DC-8 Preparing InstrumentsScientist Michelle Kim from the California Institute of Technology adds liquid nitrogen to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) on NASA’s DC-8 flying laboratory, stationed at Armstrong Flight Research Center’s 703 hangar in Palmdale, California. As part of the Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission, Caltech's CIMS will be measuring a number of chemical compounds including hydrogen cyanide, a marker for biomass burning, such as wildfires. In all, ATom’s 20 instruments will be measuring more than 200 gases as well as airborne particles in the atmosphere over the oceans across the globe. The DC-8 is scheduled to depart for its scheduled 26-day journey on July 29. |
