| 説明 | In the late afternoon, Jason, Samantha, Peter, Mark, Andrew and I went boating. We started fortuitously, the marina owners lending us the boat for an extra hour past their official closing time. I drove the patio boat, an unpretentious beast whose lack of urbane decor simply meant greater value, out of the marina and into an unforeseen adventure; for an hour after our innocuous departure, we ran into trouble when I stopped the engine so a few of us could swim in a gentle part of the lake. Without a powered engine, our boat was left to the mercy of the waves, which broke on us bitterly and pushed our meek vessel onto the rocks, at which point there was much panic, commotion and general lamentation on board. Thankfully, the crew composed itself enough to will the languid craft onto a dock, sending it rocking - crashing! - into its side. The boat left idle, we hopped out and were greeted by the owner of the property onto which we had landed violently like those seafarers lost to a tempest. The sprightly grandmother welcomed us to her 'hood - Halsey Island - and, instead of heaping scorn and vitriol onto our smarting egos, which she very well could have, she comforted us in our misery and encouraged us to continue boating. Her sagacity impressed us; and by her anecdotes and warm smiles made us realize how fortunate we were that the situation had not deteriorated beyond repair. She, the catalyst of many boating adventures in her 31 years on the lake, turned our calamity into the unforeseen adventure typical of my merry band of high school friends. We won't forget her!So the marina men arrived and swiftly started the boat while chiding us. And from that point our episodic drama began to close: we sailed back to the marina, humbled yet joyful in having been part of such an unexpected feat; and praise God, because the vessel was returned undamaged!We finished our evening at the Tinga Taqueria in Millburn where each of us feasted on an American-size burrito - yummy! |
