| 説明 | On June 2, 2016, the BLM presented its “Making a Difference” National Volunteer Awards for outstanding volunteer service in 2015 on BLM-managed lands. The annual “Making a Difference” Award recognizes exceptional volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours improving the public lands. These hard-working volunteers have helped BLM to improve fish habitat, keep campers safe, find homes for wild horses and burros, and provide environmental education and other visitor services.Shanita McLean, Eastern States Office, Virginia, won the Outstanding Youth award. : Twenty-three-year-old Shanita McLean is a graduate of the Center for Environmental and Natural Sciences Program at Virginia’s Freedom High School, a BLM partner school. She began volunteering at the BLM’s Meadowood Recreation Area in Lorton, Virginia, on National Public Lands Day 2006—as a 9th-grader—and just never stopped. She steps up to do whatever it takes to keep Meadowood sparkling, from tidying up to painting fences, and shares her passion for the environment by leading nature walks, teaching students and other visitors, and organizing events throughout the year. Shanita is currently pursuing a combination bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, and Environmental Studies while also interning at Meadowood. She assists the site Environmental Education Specialist with special projects that include outreach events in parks and schools and the development of youth activities and lesson plans. Shanita spends her scant free time attending training classes to help refine her teaching skills. However, her natural gift for working with children is what truly sets her apart. Engaging young people in hands-on, inquiry-based field trips and classroom programs is all in a day’s work for this remarkable young woman. |
