説明 | Grace Plains church and cemetery. This district of the Adelaide Plains just north of Mallala was surveyed with land sold at auction in 1864. In 1868 one of the pioneer settlers Robert Marshman donated a piece of land for a Bible Christian Methodist chapel. His sons operated a blacksmith and butchering business in the tiny settlement. A simple church was soon erected with the residents providing the materials and labour for the church. The church opened in November 1868 and cost around £230. The original eight church trustees included Robert Marshman and members of the Webster, March, Treloar, Collins and Grigg. In 1870 the trustees decided to lay out a cemetery on part of the land behind the church. Ironically the wife of William Webster, one of the trustees, was the first to be buried in the cemetery. Later the donor of the land for the cemetery Robert Marshman was also buried here. The main family names associated with this Adelaide Plains cemetery are: Adams, Broster, Franks, March, Marshman, Row and Tiller. On the second anniversary of the church in 1870 it was announced that £100 was still owing on the building and the local farmers donated 100 bags of wheat to the church to help pay off this debt. In 1872 a day school was started in the church but a government school opened a few years later down the road. (It was destroyed in the 2015 Pinery bushfires.) In 1887 Grace Plains church became the head of its own circuit of churches and preaching places. Grace Plains circuit included Kangaroo Flat, Woolsheds and Pinery. In 1896 Sugar Gums were planted around the church and they still stand. Then in 1910 a new bigger Methodist church was built at Grace Plains (the Bible Christians united with the other Methodist groups in 1900) and that is the building that is now a private residence. The Grace Plains Literacy Society used to have Sunday afternoon meetings with the Literacy society of Barabba church. Did these literary societies read more than the Bible? Although a school opened in the Grace Plains church in 1872 the government built a stone school down the road in 1894. It began with 56 enrolments that year but this had declined to around 25 enrolments in 1915. The school persisted until final closure in 1969. It was totally destroyed by the 2015 Pinery bushfires. |
