説明 | The city of Wisnewitz (aka/Wishnewitz) was two communities in one, half Jewish and half non-Jewish (primarily Polish). It was once part of Poland but subsequently taken over by Russia. Both communities had banded together over the centuries to defend each other. In 1943 the city was destroyed by the Nazis and the Jews were killed or taken to the concentration camps. Of a pre-World War ll population of 5,000, it is estimated that only 93 survived the war. This monument is a tribute to the victims of the Nazis that once thrived in the community of Wisnewitz. Located in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Queens, New York. source: "The Vanishing Generation", by Louis Parnes"NEVER FORGET" |
