| 説明 | Marsala is a town on the western tip of Sicily. Originally it was the Punic settlement Lilibeo, which later became Lilybaeum when the Romans invaded. The street layout of the modern town appears to be built over the ancient city grid. In the case of the Via XI Maggio, this is the route of the old Decumanus Maximus, the major east-west road. This is the view north-west towards the old Roman insula blocks which remain visible at the edge of town. The alternative view can be found here.Following work by Cesar Esteban on Punic cities, this could be intentionally aligned on the midwinter sunrise and midsummer sunset, depending on which way up, or down, the street you look. |
