説明 | This fascinating exhibit talks about the early fishing industry at Avalon. While the Basques, Dutch and Portuguese would initially salt fresh cod and then store it in their ship holds, the British in the 1500s introduced as 'on land' system of drying and salting the fish. In this exhibit in the Interpretation Centre museum at Ferryland, the history of fishing in Avalon is described (clear if viewed in full screen mode). Displayed below is a collection of fish hooks and net weights unearthed during the excavations at the site. (Colony of Avalon/ Ferryland, St.John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, June 2015) |
