説明 | The Atomium in Brussels -One of the most delightful man-made structures in the entire world, the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium, is fully 100 metres high, nine giant silver spheres going up into the sky, a gigantic model of the iron atom. These are photos from the daily life of writer and political refugee from the US, Dr Les (Leslie) Sachs - photos documenting my new beloved home city of Brussels, Belgium, my life among the people and Kingdom who have given me safety in the face of the threats to destroy me. Brussels has a noble history of providing a safe haven to other dissident refugee writers, such as Victor Hugo, Karl Marx, Charles Baudelaire, and Alexandre Dumas, and I shall forever be grateful that Brussels and Belgium have helped to protect my own life as well.(To read about the efforts to silence me and my journalism, the attacks on me, the smears and the threats, see the website by European journalists "About Les Sachs" linked in my profile, and press articles such as "Two EU Writers Under Threat of Murder: Roberto Saviano and Dr Les Sachs".)Built in 1958 as part of the Brussels World's Fair, the beautiful Atomium pleases the eye in an utterly unique way, evoking childlike wonder as you look up at it.Still standing in a beautiful parkland setting, the Atomium captures the optimism of that long-ago world and time, when the first Boeing passenger jets began to make non-stop flights from Europe to North America, when it seemed the world would make endless progress and anything was possible. The Atomium's shiny homage to the spirit of the 1950s, is no less stunning today than when it was first built a half-century ago. Recently restored to polished glory, the Atomium is one of the world's most stunning pieces of construction and sculpture, and remains a profound monument both to what was and what could be.To reach the Atomium -In Brussels, take metro line 1A (direction Roi Baudouin - Koning Boudewijn), or tram 23 or tram 51, or bus 84 or 88, to the Heysel - Heizel station (names are in both French and Dutch in bi-lingual Brussels). You will see the Atomium quite spectacularly as you arrive, an easy walk of some dozens of metres from the tram and metro platforms. The map with this Flickr photo set will show you the exact location of the Atomium. |
