説明 | Very impressed with the size of the excavation of this Shakespearean theatre even though a comparatively small part of it contains actual theatre remains. This is because, unlike the purpose-built Rose and Globe theatres (both of which were polygons), The Curtain is rectangular having been constructed out of an existing building - and later rebuilt again as tenements. Nothing has yet been discovered to prove unequivocally that it was a theatre, but Shakespeare scholars are in no doubt that it was because of its roughly known position and because it is unlikely it could have been built nearby. One problem still to be solved is that the reference by the Chorus in Henry V (which was thought to have been performed at The Curtain) to "this wooden O" cannot refer to The Curtain and may refer, as previously thought to the Globe. O dear. |
