説明 | Introduced warm-season annual or short-lived perennial stout tufted C4 grass; stems grow to 250 cm tall and have hairless nodes; perennial forms may have limited rhizomes. Leaf blades are broad and have distinctive white midribs; mouths of sheaths often have hairs to 1 mm long; sheaths are hairless. Flowerheads are large contracted to open panicles to 45 cm long. Spikelets are paired (lower awned, upper unawned), 4-7 mm long and 2-flowered; often red/brown on one side and green on the other. Grain is retained in the flowerhead. Flowers in summer and early autumn. A native of the Mediterranean, it is cultivated, but also a weed of disturbed areas such as roadsides and wasteland. Highly productive as a crop or forage; forages are grazed and used for hay or silage. Irrigated crops produce plants with greater bulk and size. Can be toxic to livestock; this is most likely if grazing stunted, wilted or young (less than 1 m tall) plants with hungry stock. |
