From the 1960 "Betty Crocker's Party Book," on ideas for throwing a bridal shower brunch:"Select a tall slim pitcher as your gift to the bride-to-be.[1] Fill pitcher with excelsior.[2] Push a cork into the center of a round vegetable brush. Stand the brush handle in the excelsior in pitcher so brush becomes head. Widen neck with piece of florist's clay around brush handle nearest brush; cover clay with ribbon. Using a double lace paper doily, finger pleat a ruffly collar. Fashion apron with another double doily, and sash of glossy gift tie ribbon. Complete figure with plastic scrub pad hat[3], button eyes and mouth (secured with white glue), artificial flower earrings, and hat decoration. Arrange with several household sponges."Just let me say that this is one of the saddest and most dismal things I've ever seen. I wonder how many well-meaning but naive friends followed these instructions, only to have the recipient scream and start sobbing hysterically at first sight of their lovingly made gift. "You're getting married--now your life consists of scrubbing pads and toilet brushes! Ha ha! And so you'll never forget it, here's an entire woman made out of the tools of drudgery and a very ugly pitcher. It's you! This is what you've become!"[1] Wayhey, big spender![2] What on earth is excelsior?[3] Now, that's just sadistic. And hideous. |
