説明 | View of Cathedral Square from the Palazzo dell'Arengario, which currently houses the Novecento Museum, dedicated to 20th-century art. The 'piazza' has been the most important and centrally located in the city since its creation in the 14th century, alongside the start of the works for the cathedral itself. Its current plan and appearance, however, date to the 19th century, as the cathedral's front façade was only completed in 1813, thanks to the direct intervention of Napoleon Bonaparte, who had been coronated as King of Italy in 1805 in the very Cathedral of Milan. In turn, the piazza's layout was designed largely by Giuseppe Mengoni in the second half of the 19th century. He was also responsible for the design of the monumental Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade, connecting Cathedral and La Scala squares. |
