説明 | Fryerstown. The pre gold rush pastoralist of this district was Peter Fryer. Gold was discovered on Fryer Creek, a tributary of the Loddon River, in October 1851 starting a small gold rush. Many of the miners were Cornish and members of one of the Methodist Church groups. The first church built in the village of Fryerstown as the place was named was the timber framed pre-fabricated Wesleyan Methodist of 1853. Later the Wesleyan Methodists built a new brick in 1861 which is now a private residence. Its façade has three narrow Gothic windows and entrance doors on each side of the building. The Anglicans also built a fine stone church and rectory in the same year. A couple of years later in 1863 the Fryerstown Burke and Will Memorial Institute was erected and is still in use. Fryerstown also has a fine old red brick Courthouse which is now closed and used as a home. It opened in the 1870s when Fryerstown had five hotels and was the centre of the Mount Alexander Shire. Once the alluvial gold became scarce in the early 1860s Chinese diggers persisted but the Europeans turned to quartz shaft mining. Just outside of the village of Fryerstown are the ruins of the Duke of Cornwall mine engine house. It was erected as a fine stone and brick structure in 1869 for the Anglo-Australian Mining Company. In the late 19th century Fryerstown had three hotels, five churches and three state schools. Most of the mining ceased during World War One and the population was much reduced by 1921 with less than 200 residents left. Not much is left in Fryerstown these days except for a few houses, the two churches and Courthouse and the former bootmakers workshop (1854) and the old store. The numerous former gold reefs, mining sites, stone walls, water races, powder magazines etc of this district are all within the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park. |
